A practicum or intern student is a graduate-level trainee who is completing required clinical hours as part of their master’s program in counseling, social work, or a related field. These students work under the close supervision of licensed professionals while gaining hands-on experience providing therapy. Interns are not yet licensed but are learning and developing their skills under guidance to ensure ethical and effective care.

An associate-level clinician (often called an LMSW, LCSW-Associate, LPC-Associate, or LMFT-Associate, depending on the discipline) has completed their graduate degree and passed their licensing exam, but is still working toward full licensure. They are in the process of completing a required number of supervised clinical hours. Associates are fully qualified to provide therapy and are closely supervised by a fully licensed clinician to ensure quality of care.

A fully licensed clinician (LMFT, LPC, LCSW, LMSW, etc.)  has completed their graduate education, passed all required exams, and fulfilled the state’s supervised experience requirements. They are independently licensed and authorized to provide therapy without supervision. Fully licensed clinicians may also supervise interns and associate-level clinicians, and they often have areas of specialization based on years of experience and training.
